Ellie Goulding scorches her way to first UK number one single with 'Burn'

Ellie Goulding's new single "Burn" has scorched its way to the top of the charts to score the English singer-songwriter her first ever UK number one.

More than 117,000 copies of the 26-year-old's single were sold in the last seven days, enough to elbow Miley Cyrus's "We Can't Stop" off top spot.

Goulding, from Herefordshire, sold 40,000 copies more than number two single, "Wake Me Up" by Avicii.

Since winning the Brits Critics' Choice Award in 2010, Goulding has clocked up an impressive run of 10 UK Top 40 hit singles (including "Burn"), two top five albums and a performance at Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding reception in April 2011.

Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, the pop princess said: "It means the world to me to be number one at the moment.

"It was always my dream to have a UK number one single, and it's been a long time coming.

"Thank you to everyone who bought 'Burn' and everyone who has supported me over the last three years."

Miley Cyrus falls two places to number three while Lana Del Rey holds firm at number four with the Cedric Gervais remix of "Summertime Sadness".

Lady Gaga's new single, "Applause", completes the top five.

The US star was forced to rush the single's release on Tuesday after it leaked online last weekend.

Gaga declared having to issue "Applause", from her third album Artpop, almost a week ahead of its intended release date a "pop music emergency" on her official Twitter account.

Despite going on sale two and a half days later than the rest of this week's new singles, Applause is the second highest new entry on the Official Singles Chart.

Up to midnight last night, it sold more than 38,000 copies, and has beaten new releases from the likes of Arctic Monkeys and The Wanted.

The Arctic Monkeys entered at number eight with "Why'd You Call Me When You're High" and The Wanted landed at number 10 with "We Own The Night".

In the albums chart, Britain's Got Talent duo Richard and Adam Johnson held onto the number one spot for a third week in a row with their debut The Impossible Dream.

The brothers from Holywell, North Wales, knocked X Factor runner-up Jahmene Douglas' debut full length, Love Never Fails (down 11 places to Number 12 today) off number one earlier this month.

The record is now tied with US star Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience for the most consecutive weeks at number one this year so far.

The Motion Picture Cast Recording of Tom Hooper's big screen adaptation of Les Miserables has spent the most overall weeks at number one (four) during 2013.

East London collective Rudimental climb five places to number two with their debut album, Home, while Las Vegas's Imagine Dragons hold firm at number three with Night Visions.

British post-punk trio White Lies are new in at number four with their third album, Big TV, while singer songwriter Passenger completes this week's top five with All The Little Lights.
