The long wait is over for Eurovision fans and sceptics alike.

This year’s UK entry for the Eurovision Song Content 2015 will be announced on Saturday 7 March straight after The Voice, the BBC has confirmed.

Guy Freeman, editor of special events at the BBC, said that a song that “stands out as having both instant impact and real memory staying power” has been chosen from a long list of entries.

In a blog on the BBC website, Freeman said the selection panel had received a variety of entries from “amateur and professional writers and performers”.

The open selection process for this year’s UK Eurovision entry opened last autumn, in which artists were requested to submit a song for consideration.

Freeman said: “The result of the open submission process was a very impressive collection of songs, of every conceivable type, that came in from a huge variety of amateur and professional writers.

“Some of the submitted songs were easily good enough to be commercial tracks straight away and others had clear potential, so it wasn't hard to draw up an initial shortlist of interesting contenders.

“Ultimately, one song stood out as having both instant impact and real memory staying power.”

Last year, singer-songwriter Molly Smitten-Downes represented the UK at the singing contest, in which the UK came 17th out of 26 countries.

Eurovision 2015 will take place in Vienna in May after Austrian singer Conchita Wurst won the contest last year for her performance of "Rise Like a Phoenix".
