Lana Del Rey reaches UK number one with Ultraviolence ahead of Glastonbury set

The singer-songwriter knocked Leicestershire rockers Kasabian off the top spot

Lana Del Rey has knocked Kasabian off the UK albums chart summit with her third album Ultraviolence, just days before she takes to the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

The 28-year old singer-songwriter sold twice as many copies as fellow new entry, Linkin Park’s The Hunting Party, the Official Chart Company reports.

Kasabian’s 48:13 dropped to number five after spending one week at number one. The Leicestershire rockers will headline Glastonbury this Sunday and have promised to give British rock‘n’ roll a “kick up the arse”.

Del Rey last topped the albums chart in 2012 with her debut UK release Born to Die, which became one of the top five biggest-selling albums that year.

She has made headlines in the past week after telling a Guardian interviewer that she wishes she was dead as her life is “one f**ked movie”.

Elsewhere, former X Factor contestant Ella Henderson remained at number one for a second week in the UK singles chart withher catchy debut “Ghost”.

Last week the track, co-written by One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder, became the fourth fastest-selling single of the year so far.

“Ghost” denied Australian boy band 5 Seconds of Summer a number one with “Don’t Stop” by just 3,000 copies after one of the closest chart battles of 2014.

Ed Sheeran’s hit “Sing” is in third place, with George Ezra’s “Budapest” new at fourth and Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” completing the top five.
