In news sure to spark outrage among music fans, Miley Cyrus, The Flaming Lips and MGMT are joining forces to cover the Beatles.

Fresh from duetting with the "Adore You" singer on her Bangerz world tour, the US rock band revealed the collaboration on Instagram.

Flamboyant frontman Wayne Coyne, 53, posted a photo of Cyrus with a caption reading: "Miley in the studio vomiting diamonds while singing 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds'.

"If you're a Beatles and John Lennon freak you gonna love, love, love this track! Got Andrew from MGMT too!"

Last Friday, Coyne hinted at the recent announcement when he shared a picture of 21-year-old Cyrus in an Oklahoma recording studio, rolling what appears to be a self-branded joint. "Yep, recording with Miley, high as f**k," he wrote.

Reactions to the news have been mixed, with one fan writing under Coyne’s picture: "Sorry if I don't want a washed-up Pink Floyd tribute band, and Hannah Montana, ruining one of the greatest songs of all time."

Twitter users also responded to the collaboration:

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", which appeared on 1967's Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, was penned by John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney.

Despite Lennon denying the song was about psychedelic drugs, McCartney later confirmed that it was, as believed, inspired by LSD.

Cyrus has shouted about her love of drugs on multiple occasions, lighting up a joint on stage at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Amsterdam last November and performing in a glitzy cannabis leaf print leotard for Bangerz.

The Flaming Lips have long been fans of the former Disney star. "I like her aesthetic more than a Lady Gaga, who this year to me feels like 'Take me serious' and Miley's like 'I don't give a f**k' which to me is always a lot more fun," Coyne told Rolling Stone in 2013.

"I really like that thing where the people are inside the rainbow and they walk around. I just like that sort of stuff."
