Stormzy has addressed the result of the general election, comparing it to a “dark cloud” that you could feel “in the air, in your bones”.

The grime star, who released his second album Heavy Is the Head today (13 December), has been a vocal supporter of Jeremy Corbyn and had urged his followers to vote when polls opened yesterday.

“This must be a bit of a bittersweet morning for you,” BBC 1Xtra Breakfast Show presenter Dotty said.

“I was signing albums [when the results came in] and it was like a dark cloud,” Stormzy replied. “You could feel it, even waking up today, it’s in the air, it’s in your bones.”

Stormzy has called out the government a number of times through his career so far, such as at the 2018 Brit Awards when he condemned Theresa May for her failings over the Grenfell tragedy.

On “Vossi Bop”, a single that appears on Heavy Is the Head, he raps: “F*** the government and f*** Boris.”

Heavy Is the Head has received acclaim from critics, who have hailed it as an excellent follow-up to his 2017 debut Gang Signs & Prayer.

The Independent called it a “drastic step up from an impressive debut [that] shows an artist keen to test himself emotionally, as well as artistically”.

“All of Stormzy’s best traits are present and correct: sincerity, a smooth flow and a forensic-like analysis of societal ills, laced with pathos and humour,” the review concluded.

“The lasting impression is of an artist whose only way is up.”

A number of other celebrities have spoken out in response to the election results, which you can read about here.
