Taylor Swift new 'Blank Space' video: Singer plays up to serial dating media stereotype

The singer wanted to address the internet meme that if you date Taylor Swift you will end up getting a song written about you

Taylor Swift has released the video for her latest single "Blank Space".

The second track from the country music star's first all-out pop album, 1989, appears to play on the media stereotyping of Swift as a serial dater.

In the video Swift plays a rich woman presiding over a magnificent mansion and welcoming her latest lover (Sean O'Pry) into the fold.

The couple are seen horse-riding, dancing and embracing in the vast grounds - although there is a hint of what is to come as Swift paints a portrait of her new beau with a wicked glint in her eye.

And things soon go awry after she suspects her lover of cheating on her.

Flying into a fit of anger, Swift's character is seen throwing a vase of flowers, dropping his phone into a fountain, stabbing the portrait and cutting up his clothes - all with a villainous look in her eyes.

Later on she is seen smashing up her lover's car with a golf club and stabbing a cake that represents his heart.

Unsurprisingly he leaves and then, with a wink, it's on to the next one...

The video was directed by Joseph Kahn. He told Rolling Stone: "[Taylor Swift] knows that there’s this meme that if you date Taylor Swift, you’re going to end up getting a song written about you. She wanted to address that."

1989 became the fastest-selling album in 12 years following its release on 27 October. It topped the Billboard 200 chart in the US, selling 1.287 million copies in its first week.

The record-breaking news came as Swift announced her decision to cut her entire back catalogue from Spotify.
