In the aftermath of Cream's bombastic sonic maelstrom, Eric Clapton sought gentler refuge in the gospelly R&B of Delaney & Bonnie, from whose ranks he eventually acquired the rhythm section for Derek and the Dominos.
But it was the addition of slide-guitarist Duane Allman that would ensure the epochal status of the Layla album. Jousting through a set of blues standards and sensitive originals, the two guitarists found a fiery affinity that sparked repeatedly throughout the sessions. This expanded edition incorporates two further CDs of the band in concert (sadly minus Allman) and a bonus disc of outtakes and oddities, notably an acoustic duet of Eric and Duane on "Mean Old World".
