Doctor L's production on Tony Allen's Black Voices made it one of the most innovative albums of 2000.
Here he's dealing in a similarly pared-down sound of scratchy guitars, sassy brass, bulbous bass and space-age keyboards to create an edgy Cubist take on dub Afrobeat. There are no standout tunes but guests such as Antibalas, Asa and Mr Allen himself provide necessary shifts of focus, and points of focus, in these fractured funky soundscapes.
