Album: Ebony Bones, Behold, A Pale Horse (1984 records)
The second album from Brixton-reared Ebony Thomas, a singer, actress and former Winehouse classmate at Sylvia Young, is a beguiling blend of Indian chants, Afrobeat, and the darker end of post-punk.
In places it’s a perfect fusion of These New Puritans and Transglobal Underground. In others, it’s everything people say M.I.A. is. A charmingly off-kilter choral cover of “What Difference Does It Make” will be the track that catches most ears, but it’s a gateway to a whole lot more.
