With more than 70 songs across four CDs, this compilation suffers from a gigantism at odds with the little-guy principles of its charity beneficiary, Amnesty International – and also possibly counter-productive, compared to a more affordable single album.
The interpretations range from the admirable to the abysmal, with particularly impressive work by My Morning Jacket on a "You're a Big Girl Now" that's pure emotion recollected in tranquility; K'naan piggybacking his own Somalian experience on to "With God on Our Side"; and Bettye Lavette offering an expressive vocal on "Most of the Time". Others are simply anodyne, as might be expected of Maroon 5 and Sting. And I would rather stick pins in my ears than hear Dave Matthews Band's execrable "All Along the Watchtower" again.
