It's been proven in the past that, when done correctly, big screen adaptations of TV sitcoms can be box office gold. Take The Inbetweeners, for instance, the first cinematic outing of which became one of the biggest films of 2012.

Fortunately, it seems this is also the case for Absolutely Fabulous, the newly-released movie version of which has just scored the biggest UK opening since latest Bond outing Spectre.

With opening weekend takings of £4 million, the film's stars - Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Saunders and about 57 celebrity cameos - can all breathe easy knowing the film is a huge hit.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie reunites the two as hard-drinking fashionistas Edina and Patsy. As their high life crumbles following an incident at a fashion launch party, they flee to the French Riviera to come up with a plan that'll see them live the high life once more.

Such is the film's success that it currently stands as distributor Fox Searchlight's biggest film of all time.

With a potential sequel teased by Lumley at the London premiere last week, it seems these takings - and the positive reviews - may have just sealed the deal.

The film will be released in the US on 22 July.
