American Idol viewers were left in shock on Monday (22 March) after one of the contestants fainted on stage.

Singers Ronda Felton and Funke Lagoke had just performed a rendition of “Tell Him”, originally written and recorded by Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion, when the incident happened.

As the judges gave their feedback – Katy Perry said she felt Lagoke “wasn’t perfect” and Lionel Richie’s response included criticisms of both singers – Lagoke appeared to sway a little before moving her hand to her face.

She then fainted, falling face first onto the stage. Felton and the judges rushed to her aid, while medics were called in.

Judge Luke Bryan explained to the medics that Lagoke had “busted her chin” in the fall and she was later lifted onto a stretcher. She regained consciousness as she was wheeled out of the venue and into an ambulance.

A title card explained that she “was treated for dehydration and released from the hospital”.

Richie decided to let both the singers through to the next round of the competition.

Felton said: “It’s absolutely amazing news. I can’t say that I’m happy in this moment, I’m worried about her health more than anything. That’s the number one important thing right now. I just want her to know that I love her, I care about her, and I just want her to be OK.”

Last February, Perry collapsed after inhaling fumes from a gas leak while filming American Idol. Footage emerged of her falling to the ground after the studio was evacuated.
