The first trailer for Hulu’s Animaniacs reboot has been released, 22 years after the original series ended.

The two-minute promo for the forthcoming series was exceptionally well-received by fans, with many pointing out an apparent cameo from a Donald Trump-like character.

A likeness of the US president as a giant cyclops is featured briefly in the trailer.

Animaniacs was an animated variety show focusing mainly on Yakko, Wakko and Dot, three anthropomorphic animals who were (in the world of the show) cartoon stars in the 1930s.

The show also featured a large roster of supporting characters, including genetically altered lab mice Pinky and the Brain, who would receive their own self-titled spin-off series.

The show was renowned for its inventive and irreverent humour, and dynamic animation style.

In a statement teasing the reboot, Hulu said: “After returning to their beloved home, the Warner Bros. Water Tower, the Animaniacs waste no time in causing chaos and comic confusion as they run loose through the studio and beyond, turning the world into their personal playground.”

Steven Spielberg is returning as an executive producer on the series, with voice actors Rob Paulsen, Jess Harnell, Tress MacNeille and Maurice LaMarche also set to reprise their roles.

Reaction to the trailer was roundly positive, with many fans praising the tone as being consistent with the original.

One viewer remarked that they had “watched this perfection so many times today already”.

“Thank God. Comedy is back,” wrote someone else.

“This might as well be the second coming foretold in the Bible,” joked another commenter.

All 13 episodes of Animaniacs will premiere on Hulu in the US on 20 November.
