Trailer for Season 6 of Marvel's Agents of Shield

Marvel fans were taken by surprise yesterday (28 January) when the superhero studio released the first trailer for Agents of SHIELD, some six months before the show’s expected return.

The trailer offers a first look at Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie (Henry Simmons) as the head of SHIELD and Daisy “Quake” Johnson (Chloe Bennet)’s return. There’s also the return of the previously believed dead Coulson (Clark Gregg).

More shocking, though, are some subtle hints at the outcome of the upcoming Avengers: Endgame.

Midway through the trailer, a huge truck crashes into two black cars adorned with the SHIELD logo. And while that may seem insignificant, fans believe the moments holds the key to unlocking the way Endgame may be resolved.

Cast your mind back to Captain America: Winter Soldier, when the SHILED team went underground following revelations that the villainous HYDRA had infiltrated their ranks.

Since then, the good guys at SHIELD have remained very much undercover, only becoming a public entity in season four of the television show – and even then, they have barely made themselves known to those around them.

However, with the SHIELD insignia so brazenly out in public in the trailer, does that mean the group are back saving the world in broad daylight?

Here’s where Endgame comes in. Chances are season six – although not confirmed – will be heavily impacted by Endgame, especially when season five finished just before Thanos’s Snap.

And considering Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) will appear in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the upcoming Endgame will likely conclude with SHIELD working at full capacity again, with the world once more needing a specialised task-force to deal with otherworldly threats.

Speculators have also been wondering how Coulson will return, with some believing him to now be a Skrull – one of the transforming aliens who will debut in Captain Marvel.

Agents of SHILED returns this Summer, while Endgame reaches cinemas 26 April.
