Batman won't feature in TV show Gotham, series creator confirms

Showrunner says he wants the show to focus on human characters instead

New TV series Gotham will not feature Batman, show creator Bruno Heller has confirmed.

Heller told journalists “Batman wont’ appear”, saying he wanted the series to focus more on human characters than superheroes.

“If there is a superhero in the show, it is Gotham,” he told journalists at a Television Critics Association event.

“That’s a larger than life character that’s a central part of the show. To me, heroes are more interesting than superheroes because the difference is superheroes do the impossible and drama is really about the physically possible.

“This is about people and people trying to overcome real problems versus trying to learn how to fly.”

Gotham, which will feature characters from the DC Comics universe, has been commissioned by Fox in the US and is due to debut on TV in September.

The series stars Ben McKenzie as Batman’s ally James Gordon, Camren Bicondova as Catwoman, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin and Cory Michael Smith as Riddler.

Gotham will explore Gordon’s original story as well as the villains that made Gotham famous.

Donal Logue co-stars as Detective Harvey Bullock and Jada Pinkett-Smith will play villain Fish Mooney.

Gotham starts in the US on Monday 22 September.
