Big Little Lies season 2 is in the works, says author Liane Moriarty

HBO has approached Moriarty to come up with some new ideas for a follow-up

HBO miniseries Big Little Lies may have drawn to a close, but the author of the source material has revealed she is looking into ways to continue the story for a second season.

Liane Moriarty told The Sydney Morning Herald: “I have started to think about ways this could continue.

“The producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn’t write a new book but perhaps a new story and then we’ll see what happens.”

Big Little Lies starred Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Kravitz, Shailene Woodley and Nicole Kidman (in what many have branded a career-best performance). The series tells the story of three mothers whose lives unravel to the point of murder. All seven episodes were directed by Witherspoon's Wild filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club).

This news may be bittersweet for some - while happy the tale could well be continued, critics and viewers alike praised the series for only needing seven episodes to tell its story, something that Moriarty herself is aware of.

“A lot of people have obediently done as Reese suggested,” Moriarty continued, referencing Witherspoon's recent encouragement that her fans request the author write more stories involving the series' characters.

“And 99 per cent are saying ‘Please do it,’ but there is a small percentage saying ‘No, don’t do it, it should end there.”‘

Big Little Lies was originally published in 2014.

It was recently confirmed that Deadwood showrunner David Milch had stepped into the writer's room to assist in scripts for a third season of Nic Pizzolatto's crime anthology True Detective.
