A “choose-your-own-adventure” episode of the Netflix series Black Mirror is reportedly on its way.

Plot details are scarce, though Bloomberg says the episode will be part of the show’s fifth season, which is expected to debut before the end of 2018.

Netflix has experimented with interactive episodes of television before, but only on children’s shows such as the Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots and animated series Buddy Thunderstruck.

Those behind the streaming service hope to expand the feature into more adult television – starting with Black Mirror – in the near future.

Charlie Brooker’s science fiction series will be an apt starting point as it often explores the way peoples lives are affected by new technologies. The interactive episode is said to be more complex than the children’s programmes, though exactly how complex remains to be seen.

Netflix are reported to have one other interactive project in the works and has been negotiating with others for numerous more. Two of these are adaptations of popular video-games, though the company are not moving into the video-game market.

The number of interactive television shows released in recent years have been few a far between. The most high-profile has been Steven Soderbergh’s Mosaic, which was released by HBO.
