A memorial to victims of the Manchester Arena attack has been unveiled as part of the newly-extended Coronation Street set – with special mention given to superfan Martyn Hett.

The tribute plaque is affixed to a bench in the new allotment area, part of an extension that also includes a tram stop, new restaurants and a police station. The extra locations can be seen on the ITV soap from 20 April.

Martyn Hett, one of 22 people to die in the terrorist attack at an Ariana Grande concert in May 2017, created a viral video "The Audrey Roberts Noise" in tribute to a long-running character on Coronation Street.

The actress who plays Roberts, Sue Nicholls, cut the ribbon on the new set and a snippet from Hett’s video was played at the ceremony.

As part of a product placement deal, a Co-op supermarket and Costa coffee shop will now feature. Cobbles taken from the original Manchester set, where the show was filmed until production moved to Salford’s MediaCity in 2013, have also been included.

Series producer Kate Oates said: “The Victoria Street extension represents an exciting chapter in Corrie history: an amazing new stage, full of dramatic potential.

“Our amazingly talented design team have created everything from scratch – but it still manages to have the feeling of always having been there, just around the corner.”

The new set will allow multiple scenes to be filmed simultaneously and enable the soap to move to six episodes a week.
