Dave Chappelle gets serious in SNL monologue: ‘I’ll give Donald Trump a chance but I demand he give black people one too’

Saturday Night Live guest host opening monologues are typically nothing but gags. Dave Chappelle however, in light of the recent US election, decided to get serious in his at the weekend.

He opened with some great one-liners (the Cincinnati police said that ’shooting that gorilla was the toughest decision this department’s ever had to make’ and I said, ‘Well you about to see a lot of niggas in gorillas costumes in Cincinnati’”) before looking wistfully at Obama’s legacy.

“Obama did a good job, and we’ll all mist him when he’s gone,” he declared, going on to discuss how heartened and hopeful he felt to see so many smiling black faces at a recent White House dinner.

Perhaps surprisingly, it made him not want to admonish Trump but give him a chance, but there was an important caveat.

“In that spirit,” he said, “I’m wishing Donald Trump luck and I’m gonna give him a chance.

And we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”

Dave had a very successful stint on SNL, leading to fans calling for new instalments of The Chapelle Show.
