After almost getting trapped into marrying maid Edna Braithwaite last episode, Tom Branson is quietly considering a new life for himself and baby Sybbie.

In the teaser trailer for episode five, he is seen exchanging a few loaded words with Lady Crawley in the nursery.

Lady Crawley, who could not bear to see her baby in episode one, enters the nursery hoping to spend a few extra minutes with baby George before the gong goes.

She tells Tom that her childhood “wasn’t anything like Sybbie’s”.

Branson, who has grown all the more conscious of his lower class Irish upbringing since Lady Sybil’s death, says: “Neither was mine, god knows.”

Lady Mary then asks: “Do you think she’s having a good childhood, that we’re doing well raising her,” to which Tom replies: “I think you’re doing her best for her, if that’s what you mean.”

Lady Mary responds curtly: “It isn’t quite.”

Downton Abbey continues on Sunday at 9pm on ITV
