Former Coronation Street set to be demolished

The soap relocated to a plot in Trafford, Manchester back in January

The old set of Coronation Street is due be knocked down to make way for flats and shops, following the soap’s move to a new site earlier this year.

The long-running show was filmed at a Granada TV lot in central Manchester since 1982 but was relocated to Trafford in January.

The site was bought by developer Allied London for £26 million last year and plans to rebuild the area will start next year.

Since Coronation Street moved location, the former set became a tourist attraction and opened to the public in April, drawing in 200,000 visitors.

The set is now due to close on 4 October, however, this could be extended until building work on the Granada plot gets under way.

"Coronation Street's new home is at MediaCityUK and the tour at Quay Street was always for a limited time," an ITV spokesperson told Digital Spy.

"Although we can't confirm the official closure date - once the tour has closed, ITV will return the site to Allied London with the Coronation Street lot removed."

Last year an application seeking listed status was refused by English Heritage because the site was deemed not historic enough. By obtaining listed status, there would have been restrictions put in place as to how the set could be altered.
