The Good Wife will be mirroring the US presidential race next season, with character Peter Florrick running against Hillary Clinton in a bid for the Democratic nomination.

Co-creator Robert King revealed that Peter's storyline will parallel the real-life timeline in season seven in a similar way to how Homeland bases much of its plots around newspaper headlines.

"When the Iowa caucus happens, it's going to happen in our show. If Peter runs, he is running against Hillary," King told TV Line, adding that he is "stunned in politics how things change overnight" and admitting that there will be difficulties.

Writers of The Good Wife will not be forced to adhere strictly to true life events, meaning Florrick could still win in the show, even if Clinton does in reality.

"The difficult thing for us is we started writing these scripts in June, so you're always kind of guessing where things are going," King said.

"We're not sure if Biden will enter the race at this point. We have to ability to ADR some lines in if that's necessary, but we're kind of playing the betting game at this point."

Sadly, the actual Hillary is unlikely to make an appearance as she'll be somewhat busy. There'll be no mention of a certain Donald Trump either.

Season seven of The Good Wife returns to CBS on Sunday 4 October.
