Creator of the record-breaking musical Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has also entered negotiations to portray balloonist and adventurer Lee Scoresby, according to EW.
The eight-part series will depict all three His Dark Materials books — Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass — and was first announced back in 2015.
Hooper, who won the best director Oscar in 2010 for The King’s Speech and went on to direct Les Misérables and The Danish Girl, has been circling the project for many months. According to Deadline, the filmmaker is hoping to oversee the series.
Logan breakout Keen will reportedly play the series main proteanism, Lyra, an orphan who sets out on a whirlwind adventure after a friend gets kidnapped.

The series has been written by This is England scribe Jack Thorne, who recently wrote the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. BBC One will produce the series with Bad Wolf, with Apple and Netflix reportedly hoping to buy worldwide distribution rights.
The first book in the series, Northern Lights, was previously adapted in the film The Golden Compass, which featured Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Christopher Lee, Eva Green, and the voice of Ian McKellen. A release date for the upcoming TV series has not been announced.
