Jerry Seinfeld signs huge deal with Netflix including Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Comedic royalty Jerry Seinfeld - best known for co-creating and starring in American sitcom Seinfeld - is heading to Netflix.

The actor/writer/producer has signed a 'multifaceted' deal with the streaming service that includes the popular Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee series, along with all new episodes.

Two new stand-up specials will also exclusively appear on Netflix, while the comedian will also helping to develop both scripted and unscripted programming.

Seinfeld said of the move to Netflix in a statement: "When I first started thinking about Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, the entire Netflix business model consisted of mailing out DVDs in envelopes.

“I love that we are now joining together, both at very different points. I am also very excited to be working with Ted Sarandos at Netflix, a guy and a place that not only have the same enthusiasm for the art of stand-up comedy as I do, but the most amazing technology platform to deliver it in a way that has never existed before. I am really quite charged up to be moving there."

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos added: “Jerry is known the world over as both a great TV innovator and beloved comic voice. We are incredibly proud to welcome him to the Netflix comedy family.”

Other stand-up specials that Netflix has bought over the years have included Chris Rock, Amy Schumer and Aziz Ansari. According to recent reports, the streaming service forked out $20 million each for two specials from Rock, outbidding the likes of Comedy Central, Showtime and HBO. Dave Chapelle also recently signed a huge deal with Netflix.

The sitcom Seinfeld will remain on Hulu, while Sony’s Crackle - which originally produced the award-winning Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee - has taken a huge blow. According to The Hollywood Reporter, insiders believe Netflix paid upwards of $100 million for Seinfeld.
