Love Island elimination announcement

Love Island's back after an unacceptable 48 hours away. But rather than the hoped-for fireworks, this is a bit of a night of the damp squibs (that’s an innuendo only if you want it to be).

Tommy, it’s true, is on his way to becoming the official Most Boring Islander (Callum’s gone so the throne is obviously there for the seizing). Anton is still working that wandering eye “arc” by chatting up attached islanders (presumably this is the angle the producers have asked him to follow).

Oh, and Molly-Mae has invented a new word, Tam-Tom, which is what Anton and Tommy would look like if their personalities were placed in a Star Trek transporter and scrambled together. And that is it at the end of an episode in which sparks conspicuously failed to fly. Here are the big talking points. Well alright, the very medium-sized talking points.

Amber and Anton are going to end up hating one another

Did you catch the soul-shrivelling glance Amber threw Anton after he cheekily ’fessed up to using her razor? He continues oblivious with his pampering routine. But she looks properly not impressed. She also comes across deeply narked off at him during the game of Sex Jenga they’re all made to play. We’re calling it – an Amber v Anton feud is bubbling under but soon to boil over.

Danny is… absent

We’d been braced for new islander Danny to make his arrival. He has – cue faint but not insubstantial drum roll – featured in a Little Mix photoshoot and Sherif reckons he’s probably incredibly tall and charismatic. Well is he? Erm… no idea. He popped up right before the credits as it’s revealed that he and Yewande are going on a date. Great for Yewande who deserves more screen time. But Danny’s big entrance will have to wait.

Did you crumple up inside when Anna hugged Sherif out of politeness?

The pharmacist is not experiencing any funny side-effects when in the orbit of her partner Sherif. He makes his move by telling her she’s intimidating AND attractive. She is flattered, a bit, and they hug. This seems like a big deal to Sherif. Anna looks like she’d rather be back playing Sex Jenga.

Has Anton lured Molly-Mae away from Tommy?

What’s going on with the editing? One moment, Molly-Mae and Tommy are utterly cuddlesome. The next she’s confessing to the other lady contestants that he’s self absorbed and only wants to talk about boxing. Not a lot happens tonight and more could surely be made of Molly-Mae transitioning from Team Tommy to Club Anton. As it is, it feels like a crucial scene has been left on the cutting-room carpet. Oh well, it’s sure to be included in the director’s cut ultimate edition of Love Island we’ll all be rushing out for the moment the series has finished.

Callum, who had originally been paired with Amber, became the first Islander to leave the villa this series.

He and Amber never demonstrated much chemistry and Callum didn't really bond with any of the other female Islanders, meaning he was left as the only single man following Friday's recoupling.

In his leaving speech, Callum, who said he had come on the show to meet his future wife, expressed some disappointment, though he still had hope for the future.

After being torn between Tommy and Joe for several episodes, Lucie finally made a choice between the two Islanders on Friday.

To recap: Lucie was originally paired with Joe, who appeared very taken with her, but Tommy picked Lucie as his date after joining the villa, which stirred up trouble. Lucie went back and forth between the two and kissed both of them during the challenge on Friday.

During the recoupling, though, she picked Joe. Does this mean the love triangle has finally come to an end? We'll no doubt find out more tonight.

Newcomer Molly-Mae seems to really like Tommy. They had quite the flirty chat in the villa's hot tub during Friday's episode and she picked Tommy during the recoupling.

However, she did express interest for Michael and Anton. So perhaps her head will be turned at some point tonight.

Curtis and Amy seem so smitten with each other you'd be forgiven for forgetting they met five days ago. They're definitely the "old couple" of the villa (and have doled out rather wise advice to other Islanders on several occasions).

There was potential trouble when Molly-Mae asked Curtis to have a chat with her in the hot tub, but Curtis promptly told her how much he likes Amy.

In the end, all was well, and Amy picked Curtis during the recoupling. The two remain fan favourites.

One of Love Island's former contestants hit out at the television show over the weekend.

Samira Mighty claimed during an interview that she was “obviously the token [black woman]” when she was cast in last year’s show.

“Yewande [Biala] is a token, too,” she added, referring to this year's contestant. Read more below.

Ten minutes until the episode starts. Have those personalised water bottles at the ready...

Welcome back! We've had to go an entire 48 hours without Love Island. How did you cope ? I moped around a bit and went to see the Cure. When it comes to existential catharsis, Robert Smith singing from inside his hair didn't come close to the expression on Callum's face as he got the heave-ho on Friday. Oh well, onwards and upwards. Except for Callum obviously.

Lucie and Tommy are keeping up their side of the love triangle with a bedside natter. Tommy has swallowed a fly! Joe will find that amusing.

Anna and Sherif are pretending to have chemistry. Anna describes Sherif has a human "hotwater bottle". You probably won't read about them marrying a year from now. In breaking snogging news, Lucie and Joe are exchanging saliva by the pool.
