Me and My Penis: Channel 4 documentary to show erect penis in UK broadcasting first
Programme endeavours to explore themes of sex and masculinity
Channel 4 is set to explore a number of taboos about sex and masculinity in its new documentary, Me & My Penis.
The programme, which airs tonight (Monday 31 August) at 10pm, follows British artist Ajamu X as he engages men in conversations about their penises, and what it is to be a man in 2020.
Me & My Penis will apparently also mark the first time that an erect penis has been shown on terrestrial TV.
Susanne Curran, executive producer, said of the programme: “It’s been exhilarating working with Ajamu and a brilliant cast of courageous and honest men, prepared to share their most formative and intimate experiences – so often not heard. And to capture their shared desire to change how men are defined.”
Shaminder Nahal, commissioning editor at Channel 4, added: “In this funny and moving film, the penis becomes a gateway through which to explore all sorts of aspects of masculinity.
“The men taking part deal with everything from sex to violence, fear and love, masturbation and ejaculation.”
Nahal explained that, while the show includes footage of “a range of penises and erections”, it also portrays the men involved exploring “deep, often hidden, feelings in their photography sessions – and start a conversation about our bodies and ourselves”.
Ajamu X is a London-based artist whose work was displayed at the acclaimed Hayward Gallery group exhibition Kiss My Genders, which explored and engaged with gender identity.
Me & My Penis airs tonight on Channel 4 at 10pm.
