Pokemon Go reimagined as a Black Mirror episode is an Orwellian nightmare

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last three weeks, chances are you’ve played (or at least heard of) Pokémon Go.

The mobile game, in which you catch digital creatures in augmented reality on your phone, has broken download records around the world, Nintendo share prices skyrocketing as a consequence (for a few days, anyway).

But, what if Pokémon Go is a lie? What if, since the release of the very first Pokémon game, Nintendo has been waiting for the right time to release this version of the game so they can unleash their Orwellian plan to dominate our lives?

While that’s probably not what’s going on in real life, some filmmakers have created a short film in the style of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror, showing an alternative reality in which Pokémon Go is much more sinister than just catching cute looking digital creatures.

Patrick H. Willems, the person behind the video, has previously mashed up other pop-culture phenomena, creating Wes Anderson's X-Men and Werner Herzog's Ant-Man.

A third season of Black Mirror is set to hit Netflix in the near future. Meanwhile, Pokémon Go recently irked the creators of South Park, who claimed they made fun of the game back in 1998.
