The Marvelous Mrs Maisel kicked off the 25th annual Screen Actors Guild by winning the first three trophies of the night.

The show won best comedy series ensemble, best actress in a comedy series for Rachel Brosnahan, and best actor in a comedy series for Tony Shalhoub, whose win was a surprise in a category that included Bill Hader (Barry) and Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method).

“We cannot thank you enough,” said Shalhoub, speaking for the cast. “Stay with us.”

Ceremony host Megan Mullally previously opened the SAG Awards by introducing them as “the greatest honour an actor can receive this weekend” before the ceremony opened with a trio of wins for the Amazon series.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Ozark led with four nominations each at the beginning of the evening.

Barry, GLOW, The Handmaid’s Tale and The Kominsky Method trailed close behind with three nominations each.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel premiered in March 2017 and has had two seasons so far.

The programme follows the life of Miriam "Midge" Maisel (Brosnahan) who decides to become a stand-up comedian after a messy breakup with her husband, Joel (Michael Zegen). Set in the late 1950s, the comedy-drama was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, also known for her cult classic creation Gilmore Girls.
