Sherlock: The Abominable Bride special is coming to cinemas

Sherlock will be in cinemas for the first time in the UK and US

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock is going from the small screen to the big screen, with new special Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, which is to get a limited theatrical release in the US and UK.

In addition to airing on the BBC and PBS, it will be screened in selected cinemas, where there will be 20 minutes of additional footage that includes a set tour of 221B Baker Street by showrunner Stephen Moffat and a ‘making-of’ starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

Americans won’t have to wait longer (or else pirate the special) than the Brits for the first time, with the episode airing in both countries on 1 January, 2016.

Over 500 theatres are expected to show it across 5 and 6 January, though we don’t have a figure for the UK release.

Cinemas will no doubt be packed out for the special, given the popularity of the series and Cumberbatch and Freeman’s previous box office success with The Imitation Game, The Hobbit and more.
