Sir Patrick Stewart's hometown rugby team gave their kit a Jean-Luc Picard makeover

They made it so.

The Mirfield Stags have unveiled their new alternative jersey, which pays homage to “one of the town’s proudest sons” - Sir Patrick Stewart.

The kit references arguably Sir Patrick’s most famous acting role of Jean-Luc Picard, Captain of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, adopting his uniform’s maroon colour and gold studs signifying his Starfleet rank.

“We are really pleased with the finished product,” said Stags managing director Ryan Sparks.

“Sir Patrick Stewart is quite possibly the biggest name to have ever come out of Mirfield and we are proud to pay tribute to him in this manner.

“This is a simply fantastic playing strip and it looks great on the players.”

The kit will be worn by the Stags throughout their time in the Pennine League and winter-based cup competitions, right through until the end of April.

Now we just need RUFC of Sir Ian McKellen’s native Burnley to start playing in robes while carrying a staff.
