Show will retain its 'psychosphere ambience'

True Detective will leave Louisiana for season 2 (HBO)

True Detective showrunner Nic Pizzolatto has given the first real concrete details about season 2 of the HBO show, saying that it will revolve around three leads rather than two detectives.

There has been all manner of dodgy rumours surrounding the show since it went off air, from Brad Pitt boarding the show to Jessica Chastain being one of a pair of female leads (a rumour her people since shot down), so it's nice to hear some real facts.

Pizzolatto this week gave a long radio interview that focused on deconstructing the first season of the critically-acclaimed show, but there were a few details about the second.

He said:

“Right now, we’re working with three leads. It takes place in California. Not Los Angeles, but some of the lesser known venues of California and we’re going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambience of the place, much like we did with season one. The characters are all new, but I am deeply in love with all of them. We have the entire season broken out, and I have a couple of scripts, and we’ll probably start casting within the coming month."

The snippet suggests it won't be quite as simple as a cop duo then, while the jump to California will make a big difference to the show's atmosphere, even if it does take place on its dusty fringes.

Also, "a certain psychosphere ambience" is something I can get on board with.
