Trailer for The Walking Dead season 8 episode 16

The Walking Dead is gearing up for the release of its trailer for season nine with some tantalising new information regarding the future of the series.

New showrunner Angela Kang sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the forthcoming season which is set to see some major change-ups ricocheting through the show, one of which is the departure of lead stars Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan.

When asked what The Walking Dead will look like without Cohan, however, Kang confirmed the fate of the latter's character - it seems whatever goes down in the ninth season, Maggie Rhee will not be killed.

“With Lauren, she has said that she would like to come back to the show and we would love to have her back,” she said. “We think there's more story with Maggie to tell. We already have some plans brewing that I think are pretty cool.”

While unconfirmed, Cohan is expected to star in just six episodes of the new season due to commitments on new ABC comedy series Whiskey Cavalier.

Kang's quotes seem to corroborate a circulating theory that Maggie could become the next character to jump ship to spinoff Fear the Walking Dead alongside Lennie James' character Morgan Jones.

A brand new image from the forthcoming run - which has been described as a “western” - was released by Entertainment Weekly with Kang stating: “We’ll explore what happened as man-made objects and structures break down. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are changing and crumbling. And we’ll also explore what happens as resources are getting low.”

Prior to this, a poster was released teasing a time-jump and location change confirming the characters will up sticks to Washington D.C.
