Fortitude, TV review: Viewers are no closer to unravelling the truth

Strange and violent things are happening in this remote mining community

Are you still watching Fortitude? The Arctic-set Sky Atlantic ensemble drama has had an uneven first series, but in recent episodes disparate plot strands have finally started to cohere into an intriguing plot. Strange and violent things are happening in this remote mining community and with no help from the mainland, it's up to these Fortituders to save themselves.

DCI Morten (Stanley Tucci) and Sheriff Anderssen (Richard Dormer) had reached a temporary truce and were now jointly investigating the gruesome attack on Dr Allardyce – #TrueDetectiveSeason3, anyone? Whatever inflated fee Sky Atlantic is paying its Hollywood talent he's worth it; Tucci's scenes are always among each episode's best. His chat with Henry (Michael Gambon) gave us this spark of local colour: "He stank like a reindeer's arsehole," while the interview with suspect Markus involved a diverting chat about classic Eighties vinyl.

In his aviator frames and buttoned-up shirt, Markus certainly dresses like a serial killer; conclusive proof that he isn't one. So, once again, we ended the episode no closer to unravelling the truth. At least the polar bear is off the hook.
