The seventh annual Earth Hour saw many parts of the world plunged into darkness for an hour yesterday evening to mark environmental concern over climate change and fossil fuel emissions.

Millions of people across the world switched off unnecessary lights as a mark of support for the World Wildlife Fund's push towards using "clean" renewable energy. The pop group McFly, as Earth Hour ambassadors, performed a live gig in panda outfits and the London switch-off was streamed live for the first time. Landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle also took part.
