Follow the latest updates live from the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nurburgring where Valtteri Bottas starts from pole position ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

The Nurburgring’s return to the Formula One calendar for the first time in seven years has not been short on drama, with Friday’s running completely washed out and Racing Point’s Lance Stroll ruled out with illness, meaning another call-up for Nico Hulkenberg in his place.

Qualifying also produced a surprise as Bottas left his rivals in his dust, producing a lap nearly 0.4s faster than championship leader Hamilton, who just squeezed onto the front row ahead of Red Bull’s Verstappen. There was also welcome relief for Ferrari with Charles Leclerc taking fourth ahead of the second Red Bull of Alex Albon, ahead of the two Renaults, but Sebastian Vettel starts outside of the top 10 once again after qualifying 11th. Follow live updates below.

Vettel is fighting his way back through the field, and he force Magnussen wide through Turn Two, which triggers a stern response from the Haas driver who tries to send on up the inside into Turn Four as a result, albeit to no avail. It costs him momentum, and allows Raikkonen to sweep around the outside at the hairpin.

LAP 53

Hamilton has quickly built a three-second lead over Verstappen, who has a four-second buffer to Ricciardo. It seems any hope of a late showdown is being taken away by consecutive fastest laps from Hamilton.

LAP 52

Hulkenberg, the man who yesterday morning wasn’t even racing this weekend, is the next man having a look at Leclerc and can see a top-seven finish in front of him, having started dead last.

Gasly gets a run out of the final corner and drags his way around the outside of Leclerc to take sixth.

Hamilton aces the restart and catches Verstappen cold, as he locks up into the final corner. Ricciardo has a run down the finish straight, but Verstappen holds on into Turn One and that gives Perez a shot at Ricciardo, with the Renault driver just holding on for third.

Hamilton and Verstappen are both worried about tyre temperatures, as the safety car lets the lapped cars through. That leaves just the front two, but Ricciardo Perez and Dainz soon close up to leave a five-car train as the rest of the field tries to race around and catch the snake. However, they’re going to be the ones with tyre temperature.
