‘A mighty racer and gentleman’: Tributes pour in for British racing legend Sir Stirling Moss

The Formula One icon is known as ‘the greatest driver to never to win the world championship’ with 212 wins from 529 races

Sir Stirling Moss has been described as a “a mighty racer and gentleman” after passing away aged 90.

The Formula One legend died at his Mayfair home in the early hours of Easter Sunday.

One of the greatest figures in the history of British sport, Sir Stirling is known as ‘the greatest driver to never to win the world championship’.

And tributes poured in following the sad news of his passing with Lady Moss by his side.

Former F1 driver and commentator Martin Brundle wrote: “RIP Sir Stirling Moss. A mighty racer and gentleman. He had a press on style on the track and in life. Remarkable man.

“Survived the most dangerous era of motorsport and died today aged 90. He had such great stories to tell, and it was a privilege to know him.”

Former F1 driver and Le Mans 24 winner Johnny Herbert said: “Sad sad news that legend Sir Stirling Moss has passed. World Champion in all our eyes”.

Mercedes F1 wrote: “Today, the sporting world lost not only a true icon and a legend, but a gentleman. The Team and the Mercedes Motorsport family have lost a dear friend. Sir Stirling, we’ll miss you.”

Former driver and pundit Paul Di Resta described Sir Stirling as “one of the kindest men” he had ever met: “RIP Sir Stirling Moss, what a legend. Has to be one of the kindest men I have ever met. A true ambassador of our sport, I was lucky enough to be working at some great events with the man over the years. I will always be a big fan.

F1 commentator David Croft added: “Heartbreaking news this morning. Sir Stirling Moss was amongst the best of the best, on and off the track and didn’t need a world championship to prove it. RIP you wonderful man and thankyou x.”

While the tributes stretched far beyond the racing world, with former boxing world champion Frank Bruno sharing how much Sir Stirling meant to him.

The heavyweight icon wrote: “I am very saddened to hear the passing of Sir Stirling Moss. He privately supported me over many years and was an amazing driver in his time, he will be greatly missed.”

“My thoughts are with his family and all that had the pleasure of knowing him. RIP.”

Piers Morgan also paid his respect: “RIP Sir Stirling Moss, 90. Fantastic driver – a ‘racer’s racer’ – and a dashing, debonair character.”
