The Independent on Sunday is opening nominations today for its own election: our selection of the 100 unsung heroes whose kindness and bravery help to make Britain a happier and more caring place.

This June, The IoS publishes the eighth annual Happy List, which was set up in 2008 to celebrate people whose extraordinary efforts are for no personal gain and who have often gone unrecognised outside their own communities.

They could be charity fundraisers, foster parents, environmental campaigners, emergency services workers or simply those who have done such extraordinary things to help others that their story must be told.

Last year’s list included a lollipop lady who threw herself in front of a speeding car to save the lives of children, a couple who set up a shelter for the homeless in Blackpool, a fundraiser who pushed a Brussels sprout up Mount Snowdon with his nose and Buckinghamshire’s 100-year-old barmaid.

That is the real Big Society, motivated by the commitment to help others that David Cameron recognised on Friday when he revealed plans to offer up to 15 million workers three extra days’ paid leave a year to volunteer.

As well as appearing in a special section of the paper when the list is announced in June, all the chosen 100 Happy Listers will be invited to a celebratory reception hosted in their honour by luxury hotel group Grange Hotels (www.grangehotels.com) in central London this summer.

And this year, for the first time, The IoS is partnering with the social-giving platform JustGiving to make the Happy List bigger and better than ever before. Every individual featured on the Happy List will also receive the accolade of being put forward for special recognition at the JustGiving 2015 Awards.

Like the Happy List, the JustGiving Awards recognise those who have done incredible things for causes they care about. To mark our new partnership, JustGiving is creating a special award for one Happy Lister, to be chosen from our 100 by members of the public, and announced at a glittering ceremony being staged in London this September.

In addition, a dedicated digital hub has been established, www.independent.co.uk/happylist, to support our Happy List community. Thousands of Britons do the most amazing things to raise money for the causes they love, and at the heart of Happy List hub is a forum that will seek to connect this community. It is a way to discover fundraising tips and volunteering opportunities, raise awareness, spread happiness or, if you’re just getting started, to voice any fears you might have about your volunteering goals.

The hub will also feature inspiring interviews with Happy Listers, successful charity heads and fundraisers, who will all be able to pass on their expertise, as well as being the best placed to nominate people for the Happy List 2015.

What make the Happy List so special is that the nominations are made by you, our readers. Unlike lists that produce catalogues of the wealthy, heirs, heiresses and bonus-baggers, everybody knows someone who does the most amazing things for others. Please, tell us about them.

How to nominate

These volunteers, by their nature, are not generally attention-seekers, so we need your help to find those who deserve to be celebrated in your area.

All we require are a few details about the individual you are nominating - including their name, age and, if possible, a way to contact them – and the reason why you’re putting them forward.

Nominations from all corners of the UK, all cultural backgrounds, and people from all parts of the community are welcome.

Please nominate online by going to independent.co.uk/happylist, via

email to happy@independent.co.uk or by writing to: Lisa Markwell, Editor, The Independent on Sunday, 2 Derry Street, London W8 5HF.

The selected entries will be revealed in The Independent on Sunday’s Happy List 2015 in June. Individuals cannot nominate themselves.
