The air is crisp and the colours are sharp, making this the perfect time of year to explore the UK’s most spectacular vistas

1. Shepreth, Cambridgeshire

Starting at Shepreth train station, this is a lovely circular walk that takes you via Barrington and Harlton as you wander through the Upper Cam Valley. The footpath is mostly flat, but there are a couple of fairly steep hills in the mix.

2. The Craigievar Castle Trail, Aberdeenshire

Set in rolling hills and lush countryside, Craigievar Castle cuts an almost surreal presence. The Disney-style pink-hued fortified house is surrounded by unusual trees that look fantastic in autumn. There are two trails.

3. To the top of Ben Lomond, Stirlingshire

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as ticking off one of Scotland’s many, spectacular munros. Ben Lomond is the country’s most southerly munro. The trek to the top is fairly challenging, but it is worth it for the stunning views.

4. Formby Red Squirrel Walk, Liverpool

Perfect for a family amble, this gentle walk through the woodland home of the red squirrel is the perfect way to spot one of Britain’s much-loved critters. Even if no squirrels are found, expect to see plenty of wildlife.

5. Hinton Ampner Autumn Colour Walk, Hampshire

Taking in views of the South Downs countryside and the woodlands around Hinton Ampner, this two-hour walk should appeal to anyone hoping to enjoy the full spectrum of autumn colour.

6. Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate Family Fungi Walk, Stockport

In a setting steeped with the history of the industrial revolution, go on a hunt for mushrooms in the forest as the leaves start to fall. The walk goes round Styal woods and finishes, appropriately, with mushroom soup and a traybake.

7. Ashridge Autumn Colours Walk, Hertfordshire

A bright and fantastic walk for the season that takes you through woodland alleys, meadows and the historic Ashridge Estate. Starting at the visitor centre near Berkhamsted, it is ideal for Londoners who want a break from the city.

8. Newgale to St David’s, Pembrokeshire

A bracing and breathtaking walk along the Welsh coast, which is long in distance but leisurely in terms of terrain. The route goes via the picturesque Solva village and includes wonderful views over the Solva Harbour.

9. Little Salkeld, Lacy’s Caves and Long Meg, Cumbria

A 2.5-hour hike set in the unique surroundings of the Eden Valley. The comfortable walk passes by a river, the fascinating Lacy’s Caves cut into sandstone rock and the Long Meg stone circle.
