Tony Hall insists the BBC now 'has a grip on the money' as Lord Patten and Mark Thompson face off in front of the Public Accounts Committee over who knew what about the huge payoff for former execs.
Mr Thompson has told MPs a £1m payout to his former deputy was part of a wider move to cut the level of senior management.
