Kevin the carrot gets saved by Santa in new Aldi Christmas ad

Kevin the Carrot channels E.T. and Home Alone in this year’s Aldi Christmas advert which has finally dropped.

The festive campaign follows a teaser film released on 1 November and stars British acting royalty Jim Broadbent as Father Christmas.

This showed the orange vegetable flying a plane with his co-pilot friend, Lieutenant Turkey, before being accidentally ejected from the plane and parachuting into woodland.

In the full release, we see Kevin’s carrot wife and children, Jasper, Chantenay and Baby, preparing for Christmas at home, with Baby carrot declaring: “It’s not Christmas until my daddy gets home.”

To the emotive soundtrack from Home Alone, we watch our hero battling through the snow and artic wind to get home.

Kevin is fortunate to meet a hedgehog named Harry who he hitches a ride with, only to plunge off a cliff into icy waters.

Thankfully, Father Christmas is on hand to rescue the root vegetable and his prickly pal.

Wrapping Kevin in a white blanket à la E.T., Father Christmas places the pair in the front basket of his bicycle and flies through the air, silhouetting the moon similarly to the classic Spielberg film, as his children watch on.

Kevin is reunited with his carrot family in time for dinner, on a table groaning with festive food, while Father Christmas concludes the story with the words: “The magical moment was finally here/Christmas together with those you hold dear.”

At time of press, the advert has been viewed on YouTube almost one million times in less than 24 hours.

This year marks the fifth appearance of the animated carrot, who has starred in the German supermarket chain’s annual Christmas advert since 2016.

Fans of Kevin can purchase a range of themed merchandise launched by Aldi to accompany the advert, including mugs, pyjamas, toys and tree decorations.
