It’s a good thing the carpet wasn’t red at the 70th Emmy Awards.

In a subversion of Hollywood norms, celebrity arrivals walked and posed on a sand-coloured mat, which, unlike its traditionally scarlet counterpart, allowed kaleidoscopic ensembles to reign supreme against its muted hue, which quite literally paled in comparison.

Hosted by Saturday Night Live’s Michael Che and Colin Jost, the ceremony itself was of course about celebrating the year’s top TV talent, with Game of Thrones winning the biggest accolade of the night, but like most glitzy affairs which warrant fixing up and looking sharp, the sartorial prowess of attendees was no less worthy of acclaim.

Arriving in their finest formal garb, stars such as Scarlett Johansson and Tiffany Haddish congregated at Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles in a debonair display that would rival even the savviest of street stylers on parade at London Fashion Week.

From Jessica Biel looking regal in Ralph and Russo to Chrissy Teigen glittering in Zuhair Murad, click through the gallery above to see the best-dressed stars on Monday’s beige (not red) carpet.
