To me, Marathon is just the proper name for Snickers, although the more I hear about this carb-loading deal, I am tempted to reconsider.

It's not just physical fitness that will help see you through 26-and-a-bit miles of sweat-dripping pavement-pounding, a bit of mental stamina is needed, too – as well as something to look forward to once you cross the finish line. After the race is over and the adrenalin has worn off, your body probably won't be too happy with you, but there are a few ways to coax it back. Best of luck!

De-stress muscle gel

£24, aromatherapyassociates.com

Warming black pepper and ginger and relaxing rosemary and lavender combine in this topical gel, the perfect salve for screaming muscles and joints.

Muscle & joint pain Epsom salt bath soak

£8.49, theecobath.com

The high magnesium content of these traditional salts can reduce pressure, swelling and aching muscles, while menthol and eucalyptus will help revive the mind.

Burst of Energy body & hand wash

£16, neomorganics.com

Dragging your tired, aching self out of bed the morning after may feel like a marathon in itself – this invigorating blend of citrus and rosemary is a just reward.

Arnica sore muscle oil

£34.95, theorganicpharmacy.com

Arnica is beloved for its anti-inflammatory properties and can help with bruising if used before and after the big race.

Fabulous feet foot soak

£22, margaretdabbs.co.uk

Running can take a serious toll on your feet, so this hydrating foot soak will help calm puffiness and fix dehydrated skin and nasty nails.
