As frosty weather sets in so does fashion’s biggest question; when is it OK to wear tights?

While for many it begins as soon as the sunshine starts to dwindle, for those in the bare leg brigade, they’re an inconvenience that even winter’s iciest chill couldn’t persuade them to wear.

However, the million denier question of when to wear tights this year has thankfully never been easier to answer, as the runway has officially hailed hosiery high fashion.

From Balenciaga’s acid green and burgundy styles to Celine’s lacy crochet wool offerings or Mulberry’s thick back-to-school wool tights worn with chunky loafers, now they serve not only as extra insulation but to also upgrade your outfit.

But, what type should you go for?

If you’re looking to add more mileage to your mini skirts and dresses then a pair of black tights really is all you need. Whether you like them super-dark or transparent to show a bit of leg, we think this style looks best paired with A-line mini skirts, roll necks and pointy flat shoes for a retro look.

Alternatively, and controversially, fishnets are also an option. A style that was once more closely associated with ladies of the night, holey hosiery is officially back en vogue but to shake off any unwanted connotations, make sure you wear them with longer lengths.

When it comes to taking something you thought you knew and reimagining it into a focal point of your look, statement tights can easily elevate your winter basics to have a more high-fashion feel. Here, try embracing a printed leg for a quirky twist, be it lace or polka dot design, and pair with a classic LBD for the weekend.

The focus on hosiery doesn’t stop at tights either. If an all-over style feels a little too lacklustre for your liking try opting for a pair of sheer socks worn to reinvigorate heels or a fishnet pair peeking through a turned-up trouser hem.
