The weather misery continues, but this weekend offers up a glamorous distraction as the fashion glitterati descend on the capital for the start of London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2014.

Kicking off today, the five day event at Somerset House features the most celebrated names in the industry, as well as tomorrow’s bright young stars.

Although spring seems a long way off, let alone next autumn, keen fashionistas will be taking notes on the hottest trends for next season.

Highlights over the coming days include shows from Emilia Wickstead, who is one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s go-to designers, Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label, and Richard Nicoll.

Overall, this year’s show will feature 77 designers and over 5,000 visitors are expected to attend.

But there’s more to London Fashion Week than endless lines of thin models draped in beautiful and expensive garments.

The British fashion industry is worth an estimated £26 billion to the UK economy, while fashion’s wider, indirect contribution to the economy, through areas such as beauty, is estimated to be more than £46 billion, according to the British Fashion Council (BFC).

Meanwhile, the UK fashion industry is estimated to support 797,000 jobs.

Brace yourselves for the social media deluge: Instagram filters at the ready.
