For Rosie Llewellyn — aka food blogger A Little Lusciousness — when playing host to Sunday lunches for her pals started to get out of hand, with more and more people attending, she knew she needed to take action.

“I was buying all the food for 20 people and spending all weekend cooking ridiculous dishes,” she says. “A friend of mine suggested I run it as a supper club. That was six years ago.”

Rosie started by squeezing people into her north London flat, but as her pop-ups have grown in popularity, she now collaborates with cafés and delis that would otherwise be closed in the evening.

For the most part, Rosie themes her nights around an ingredient that’s in season, but more recently she’s been hosting a series called Tastes Of My Travels, focused on the cooking of different countries and regions. “You can go to a French restaurant,” she explains, “but you can’t go to a restaurant serving the cuisine of Jura, for example. That sparks people’s interest because it’s an experience you can’t get in a restaurant.

Being able to present something so specific and so personal is part of why she thinks supper clubs are so popular. That, and the opportunity to meet a new people.

“I get a real mix of ages and backgrounds and lots of solo diners,” she says. “Everyone sits on a communal table and talks to each other — you can’t not speak to the people around you, really. Sometimes I do sharing dishes, which encourages conversation, as people start talking about cooking and food. People who’ve never been to a supper club will talk to people who have about what pop-ups are like and I think there’s a bit of a buzz around being together experiencing that.”

The joy of getting a diverse range of people in a room, united around their passion for food, is what motivates Rosie to fit her monthly supper club around her day job.

“People who come with friends often come back alone because they realise it’s something good to do to meet new people,” she adds. “Everyone talks to everyone, it’s very communal.

“I’m excited about doing a pop up with Campo Viejo wines as I’ll be able to show my guests new ideas of food to pair with delicious wines that are readily available to them. It’ll be a sumptuous evening.”
