London coffee shop sells 'most expensive cup of coffee in UK' for £50

A coffee shop in London is selling what it claims is “the most expensive cup of coffee in the UK” for £50, with only 15 servings of the costly brew available.

Queens of Mayfair, which was opened by sisters Grace and Victoria Sheppard in March 2020, is located on Queen Street in Mayfair.

The Ethiopan “Cup of Excellence” Queens Coffee being sold by the artisan coffee shop was purchased at auction by the company’s roaster, Difference Coffee Co.

According to Queens of Mayfair, Difference Coffee Co was one of only two companies in the UK invited to buy the coffee at auction.

The rare beans, which won first place at the Cup of Excellence Competition, typically retail for approximately £2,000 per kilogram.

The beans were bought at auction in June this year before being roasted in London this month.

Once the coffee has been prepared at Queens of Mayfair – a process that involves the beans being ground by hand – it is served to customers in a crystal wine glass.

The coffee shop states that one serving of the coffee could be enough for either one or two people.

Victoria Sheppard, co-owner of Queens of Mayfair, said that the company takes great pride in offering “the finest produce throughout our menu at Queens of Mayfair”.

Amir Gehl, owner of Difference Coffee Co, said the firm is “extremely excited to continue our collaboration with Queens of Mayfair in terms of pushing the boundaries of what is possible in terms of quality and by showcasing one fo the world’s best certified coffees”.

“Not only is it an incredible and rare commodity, it is also making a difference to the farmers in Ethiopia,” he said.

Through the Fair Trade Cup of Excellence programme, the farmer who produced Ethiopan “Cup of Excellence” Queens Coffee beans received the full auction price, Queens of Mayfair said.
