Sunday lunch

Ruinart Rosé NV

If it is a really elegant pink champagne you want for an indulgent start to a Mother's Day celebration meal today, then this fizz fits the bill. From the oldest champagne house, established in 1729, it is a blend of 45 per cent Chardonnay and 55 per cent Pinot Noir, creating a smooth and silky mouth feel, with lots of vibrant red-fruit aromas. Exceptional as an aperitif with canapés or with first courses such as tuna carpaccio. £39.85, masterofmalt.com; £48.99, Wine Rack; £54, bbr.com

Midweek meal

Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Spiegel 2010

Grüner Veltliner is a very special, distinctive wine and the best thing to come out of Austria since Sachertorte. Beguilingly full-bodied, complex and aromatic, with sharp flavours of apple and quince, yet dry and spicy, this is a fine example of a white wine with enough character to match white meats such as pork cutlets in a mustard sauce or, more appropriately, a retro Wiener schnitzel. £11.92, goedhuis.com

Bargain basement

Guigal Côtes du Rhône 2007

From the reliable Guigal stable, this does exactly what it says on the label: an uncomplicated southern Côtes du Rhône bottle. Robust, with touches of spice, wild herbs and dark fruits, it all combines into an easy-drinking whole that would be perfect to accompany a Mother's Day meal. And the current offer price makes it a particularly good bargain to snap up today. £7.99 (until 20 March; normally £9.99), Waitrose
