Sunday lunch

Domaine des Garennes Minervois La Livinière 2008

As autumn fades, evenings turn chilly and the festive period looms, our tastebuds demand meaty casseroles, big roasts and blue cheeses. To accompany them, we need hearty wines such as this magnificently intense and characterful southern French blend, full of wild herbs, seasonal spices and sun-baked black fruit flavours. Is it too early for a mince pie? £10.99, Marks & Spencer

Midweek meal

Las Mulas Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Given the warm autumn, we may still be enjoying the odd mild day right into December, for which a lightly chilled white is perfect. A sprightly, effervescent, organic wine from Chile's Central Valley, Las Mulas is named after the mule who helps, er, "fertilise" the vineyard. Luscious, long-lasting, refreshing tropical-fruit flavours, with a nice underlying crispness. Goat's cheese tart or sushi work well here. £8.99, Waitrose

Bargain basement

Freixenet Elyssia Gran Cuvée Cava Brut

Whatever the weather, it is certainlythe time to stock up on party sparklers and this case offer on one of the best cavas around is worth a look. At the top end of the Freixenet range and made from a blend of traditional champagne and local grapes such as Macebeo and Paralleda, it is packed full of peachy, toasty, nutty flavours. Great for any gathering but elegant enough for an aperitif with canapés. £60 for 12 bottles (normally £90; minimum purchase 12 bottles), tesco.com
