Wine & Rind: Is the cheese toastie making a comeback?

The 1970's still have a lot to answer for, culinarily speaking.

Unnatural stuffings. Entire meals set in aspic. Fruit mixed with meat and sometimes marshmallow, too.

Perhaps these traumatic memories are why that decade's other staple, the Breville sandwich toaster, still lies languishing in so many cupboards.

As many as half of Britons admit to owning one of these devices but not using them.

Holly Chaves, a Tottenham-based cheesemonger, is on a mission to restore the sandwich toaster to its rightful place at the heart of the British kitchen.

This month, her Wine & Rind residency at Sourced Market, in St Pancras station, is selling a selection of toasties designed to revive a great British delicacy - but you've only got a few days left to try them there.

"What I love about the Breville is that everyone can relate," she told The Independent.

"Everyone's had one, everyone had a favourite flavour, and most people have one tucked away in a cupboard somewhere."

Cheese-lovers have just a few days left to sample one of Chaves' carefully-crafted flavours: plain cheese, onion and "classic" - with ham and cornichons - as well as changing specials.

All are made with a special blend of raclette and cheddar cheeses. Cold sandwiches to be cooked at home are available, as well as hot ones cooked onsite. Not content with winning local stomachs, Chaves says she has her eye on the Eurostar clientele, too:

"I'm going to tempt the day trippers from Paris away from their Croques and towards the humble Breville."
