On the day of the much anticipated launch of GTA 5 online, Rockstar’s premier title has been supplanted by FIFA 14 at the top of the UK games chart.

According to statistics collected by chart-track.co.uk, FIFA 14 has surged to the top of the charts after its release last Friday, subsequently knocking GTA 5 down into second place.

This may come as a surprise to some, especially after GTA 5’s record-breaking feats in the world market. Just three days after it hit the stores, the game smashed the $1bn sales mark, making it the fastest selling entertainment product in history.

But if there was going to be any game to challenge GTA’s dominance, it was going to be FIFA 14. There were initial doubts that the impending next-gen version of the game may have dissuaded some gamers from splashing out on the current version, but after today’s charts, the doubts appear to have been unfounded.

Even so, it remains to be seen how the two titans of gaming will fare over the coming weeks and months with GTA perhaps regaining its popularity with the launch of the online portion of the game, live from today.
